Undercurrents Letter from Athienou

Letter fom Athienou Video, 10’03”, Installation, salt, text on paper, 2023/2024

Originally an artwork created on residency while in Athienou, Cyprus. In this video, Christine Cheung links her personal emotional experiences of conflict through a letter with local memories of Cyprus. She connects an artwork that she produced in Cyprus with video footage, stills and text created during her stay in Athienou, a village in the UN buffer zone situated in the middle of the island. Her encounters with the locals become intertwined with her memories and emotions of separation. This intimate work delves into the boundaries between the personal and the collective. The letter connects to a broader context by referring to specific place names and events. Released online with Temp.Files, an online video-making collective. Shown as part of the group show, "To the Sea, With her Names," curated by Shaoan Huang, Kika Gallery, (Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan) 2024 Original installation shown at "To the Sea, With her Names", group show, curated by Shaoan Huang, Kallienou Museum, a parallel event of Lanarca Biennale, Athienou, Cyprus, 2023 The video is created with support from Kika Gallery and Temp.Files.
